Work under way to clear waterlogged areas

Emergency teams were working round the clock to remove rainwater that had accumulated in different places as a result of the showers experienced over the weekend, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) tweeted yesterday, urging people to co-operate with the authorities.

Some parts of the country could receive some rain today as well, the Qatar Met department said, informing that Ras Laffan in northern Qatar had received the highest rainfall between Thursday and Saturday.

A number of roads in Doha and elsewhere were flooded following heavy showers after midnight on Friday and then again on Saturday afternoon. There were reports of rain and hailstorm - in some areas – after midnight on Saturday and in the early hours yesterday as well.

As thundery rain resumed in parts of the country yesterday evening, the Met department reminded people “to avoid going into the sea due to unsettled weather affecting the country and the continued risk of thunderstorms”.

Thundershowers were initially observed in the southern parts of the country yesterday evening, gradually spreading to the central areas. Rain, thunder and lightning were experienced in Doha, too, at night.

The Met department, on its part, re-issued an advisory on how to stay safe during thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, statistics issued by the department showed that Ras Laffan had received the highest rainfall – 35.3mm - from Thursday until Saturday. It was followed by Abu Samra (31.2mm), Mesaieed (31.1mm), Wakrah (30mm), Al Khor airport area (29.9mm), Hamad International Airport area (21.8mm), Jumayliyah (20.9mm), Qatar University area (20.7mm) and Doha airport area (20.6mm).

The detailed forecast for today says partly cloudy conditions are expected and there is a chance of scattered rain in some places at times.

Offshore, it will be hazy and partly cloudy and there is a possibility of scattered rain in the early hours of the day.

A minimum temperature of 18C is likely in Abu Samra today, while in Doha it will be 21C. The maximum, on the other hand, will range from 23C to 27C in the country.

Yesterday, a minimum temperature of 19C was recorded in Karana and 22C in the Doha airport area. The maximum was between 22C and 27C.

The inclement weather experienced around the country is the outcome of a spell of unstable weather, as forecast by the Met department last week. The conditions were expected to last until today.
