Two-day virtual AI art-making workshop announced

Art enthusiasts, Culture Pass members in particular, will have the opportunity to take part in a virtual Artificial Intelligence (AI) art-making workshop on March 21-22.

The two-day activity, organised by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) associate professor Dr James She in partnership with Qatar Museums, will introduce participants to an array of AI technologies and tools for art creation, such as StyleGAN, Dall-E, RunwayML, and wuji, in addition to discussing the recent history and trends of AI and art.

Dr She obtained his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada.

His team from the College of Science and Engineering at HBKU in Qatar is currently active on content creation, understanding and interactions for art, cultural and creative media using AI.

“Further discussion will be on the emerging social and cultural impacts of AI technologies in the art, museum and technology communities,” QM said in an e-mail to Culture Pass members Sunday.

The fee is QR100 for two days, and the activity will take place on Zoom from 4pm to 6.30pm.

Culture Pass Plus members will be given a 10% discount.

The workshop requires participants to have a computer with Internet connection; the organisers will provide the AI platform to create simple AI artworks.

Dr She is one of the artists selected as part of Doha Fire Station’s Artist in Residence programme, which provides mentorship, working with curators, open studios and access to the building’s facilities such as fabrication lab, woodshop and exhibition spaces.

He is currently showcasing his latest AI collection at Doha Fire Station’s Gallery 3 in an exhibition titled *Keep Running: AI (artificial intelligence), Art and Qatari Heritage, running until April 7.

The artist’s works were drawn from a series of AI paintings, portraying distinguishable horses’ features and forms while creating aesthetic value and even capturing sentimental reactions in each horse portrait using generative adversarial network (GAN) technology.

“I produced all these (artworks) while I’m sitting in a hotel room, I wasn’t even involved in the studio residency yet, so I produced halfway through,” he told *Gulf Times. “I showed them, and they saw the potential, so they invited me to the residency.”

In line with the coronavirus (Covid-19) precautionary measures stipulated by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), those who want to see Dr She’s work at Gallery 3 should present a green health status on their Ehteraz app upon arrival.

Masks are required for all visitors (12 years of age and older). Each person will also be checked for a normal body temperature reading at the entrance.

Visitors who have a high temperature or do not have a mask will not be allowed into the Fire Station.
