Surveillance cameras record traffic violations at intersections: Official

Doha: Director of the Traffic Awareness Department of the General Directorate of Traffic, Colonel Muhammad Radi Al Hajri, has said that surveillance cameras are recording traffic violations at intersections and traffic signals.

“Surveillance cameras record some traffic violations committed by motorists like stopping in yellow box especially at intersections and traffic signals and others violations of traffic rules,” said Al Hajri while speaking in a Qatar Radio programme recently.

He said that the system of surveillance cameras was launched about six months ago but now the motorists are forced to adhere to traffic rules at these places especially at intersections and traffic signals which witness large number of vehicles. 

Al Hajri pointed out that some violations of traffic rules  at intersections and traffic signals caused traffic jam.

To a question about most common violations during Eid, Colonel Muhammad Radi Al Hajri said: “During previous Eids jumping traffic signals were among common violations but this Eid Al Fitr minor road accidents were recorded at traffic signals.”

Al Hajri said that the traffic situation in Qatar was satisfactory during first and second day of Eid Al Fitr. 

He said that on the first day of Eid Al Fitr few traffic violations were recorded in front of mosques and prayer grounds.

 “I would like to thank all motorists for adhering to traffic rules during holy month of Ramadan which led to decline in traffic accidents,” said Al Hajri. 

He said that increasing awareness among motorists about traffic rules influences their behaviour, which reflects on traffic situation in general in the country.

“The Traffic Department in coordination with Internal Security Force Lekhwiya and Fazaa is ensuring the compliance of motorists with COVID-19 measures like carrying only allowed number of passengers, holding active Ehteraz app and wearing face masks,” said Al Hajri.

To a question about making riders of delivery bikes to adhere to traffic rules, he said that delivery boys have been educated about traffic rules of Qatar through especial programmes.

“Awareness lectures have been organised for delivery boys and a lecture was held last week,” said Al Hajri.

Regarding e-scooters, he said that it is new thing which is being regulated with the partners of Traffic Department. 

Director of the Traffic Awareness Department urged all road users to be cautious, adhering to traffic laws and executive regulations to ensure their safety and of others.
