In a novel project to support organ donation, Qatar Charity (QC), together with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), will soon create a special fund, officials said yesterday.

Families of organ donors will be supported through foreign branches of QC, with a new collaboration with HMC’s Qatar Centre for Organ Transplant.

The collaboration in line with the Doha Donation Accord, also aims to raise awareness about organ donation.

“QC is always keen to support organ donors and their families and sponsoring the campaign comes as part of our commitment to enhance partnerships with national organisations, particularly in promoting social and humanitarian activities,” Abdul Nasser Al Zaher Al Yafie, Executive Director, Collection and Branches Department, QC, told a press conference yesterday.

He said the campaign will utilise QC’s experience in collecting donations to creating the fund.

“QC appreciates the role of Qatar Center for Organ Transplants in promoting organ donation among the community and honouring donors and their families in recognition of their contributions to life-saving efforts in Qatar,” he said.

The collaboration will support HMC’s ongoing 40-day awareness campaign being held at various locations to create awareness about organ donation.

Within the first two weeks of the campaign, about 6,000 people have registered, agreeing to donate organs in case of death.

The campaign aims at receiving 20,000 registrations, said Dr Riadh Fadhil, Director, Qatar Organ Donation Centre (Hiba).

His team has trained more than 400 HMC staff involved in the awareness campaign.

The campaign urges residents to consider registering as organ donors. Volunteers, who can speak different languages, help people understand the cause and make a more informed decision about registering as a donor.

Qatar has 16,000 people registered as donors, which experts say is not sufficient to meet the need.

Dr Yousef AI Maslamani, Head and Consultant, Organ Transplant Department, said, “We need more donors to register in Qatar so that nobody has to face losing a loved one while waiting for an organ.

“Residents need to know that organ donation is a safe procedure that would not impact a donor’s health detrimentally.”

He urged the public to visit organ donation booths and learn more about types of organ donation. The Peninsula
