Doha, Qatar: The 2nd Souq Waqif International Dates Exhibition kicked off yesterday, just in time as Ramadan draws near. Running from February 25 to March 5, the event offers a delightful array of date varieties from both local and international producers.
Traditionally associated with Ramadan and commonly consumed to break the fast, dates hold a special place in Qatari culture. The exhibition, held at Al Ahmad Square within the historic market, showcases a diverse range of dates, including popular varieties like Halawy, Mazafati, and Medjool, as well as unique combinations like Milk Chocolate Date Almonds and Coconut Dates.
Visitors can explore the exhibition daily from 9am to 12pm and from 3.30pm to 10pm, free of charge. After a hiatus since 2019, the return of the International Dates Exhibition is eagerly anticipated, offering a chance to indulge in this cherished fruit.
According to Qatar Tourism, dates are not only a local delicacy but also a cultural symbol deeply rooted in Qatari hospitality. With Qatar's favorable climate, date cultivation thrives, with production exceeding 30,000 tonnes in 2022.
Beyond Qatar, dates hold significant cultural and religious importance, especially in the Middle East. In Islamic tradition, dates are valued for their nourishing properties and are commonly consumed during Ramadan for their energy-boosting benefits. Their versatility and nutritional value make them a staple in warm, arid climates.
Meanwhile, the Tadweer Art Exhibition, also taking place at Souq Waqif's Western Square until February 29, showcases artworks crafted from recycled materials. Featuring the works of 30 artists from over 17 countries, the exhibition highlights sustainable practices and environmental consciousness, demonstrating the intersection of art and sustainability. Organized by the Souq Waqif Celebrations Committee in collaboration with the Souq Waqif Art Centre, the exhibition features approximately 280 innovative creations, inviting visitors to explore the beauty of recycled art.
