Significant drop in temperature likely from Friday

The Qatar Met department has said wintry conditions are set to prevail in the country as northwesterly wind activity is expected to increase by the end of the week, coinciding with the beginning of the Al Merbania season tomorrow.

As a result, a significant dip in temperature is expected from Friday (December 8) evening, the weather office has said in a statement. The drop will be by about 3-4C from the average levels.

The Met department has also advised people to avoid marine activities as strong winds and high seas are likely in offshore areas today due to thundery rain.

The wind speed will be 7-15 knots, reaching a high of 21 knots in some offshore areas during thundershowers, while the sea level may rise to 6ft.

The detailed forecast says hazy and partly cloudy to cloudy conditions are expected offshore along with a chance of scattered rain, which may be thundery at times.

Meanwhile, it will be hazy in some inshore areas in the early hours of the day, followed by mild daytime conditions, scattered clouds and a weak chance of light rain in some places. It will also be relatively cold by night.

The minimum temperature today is expected to be 15C in Abu Samra, 16C in Al Khor and 19C in Doha.

Yesterday, the mercury level dipped to 16C in Abu Samra, Turayna and Karana, while in Doha it was 20C.
