QUق€™s Biomedical Sciences dept holds orientation for students

Qatar University (QU)'s Biomedical Sciences department welcomed its new students through an orientation session held by Dr Marawan Abu-Madi, the programme director, Ofelia al-Otaibi and Sumbul Bushra. The vision and mission of the department were discussed at the orientation event. The vision of the department is to prepare medical technologists and researchers by way of an accredited and standardised education to apply their knowledge and skills to enhance the healthcare sector in Qatar.

The mission of the department is providing quality education that prepares competent biomedical scientists, equipping them with theoretical and practical knowledge, critical thinking and analytical skills, scientific research abilities and communication skills, while also emphasising ethical practice within the healthcare industry. Following that, Bushra, who works as a teaching assistant, explained to students the degree requirements and their study plan. Statistics have shown that the biomedical sciences community is growing in Qatar as the number of applicants keeps increasing, going up this semester to 49, and 17 of them were accepted.

The Biomedical Sciences department at QU has a NAACLS accreditation for 10 years, giving graduates the chance to take the Board of Certification of the American Society of Clinical Pathology Examination (ASCP). The average rate of graduates passing the ASCP exam was 73% between 2015 and 2018. Moreover, Biomedical Sciences graduates are employed in various laboratories such as Hamad Medical Corpuration, Sidra Medicine, Qatar Biobank and QU.
