Contracts amounting to nearly QR3.3bn were awarded yesterday for building new roads and developing essential basic infrastructure in different parts  of the country, in particular in Wukair and Wakrah,  under Ashghal’s Construction and Development of Infrastructure in Local Areas programme.

Besides facilitating smooth flow of traffic along the areas where works are to be undertaken, the connectivity across the country will shoot up considerably once the projects are completed, said senior engineer and President of Ashghal Nasser Ali al-Mawlawi while awarding the contracts.
Among the notable works to be taken up as part of the new contracts in coming months include a QR674mn programme to develop roads and other infrastructure for the upcoming government residential projects in Al Wukair (North), and roads and necessary infrastructure in the West of Al Meshaf (QR518mn) and Al Sailiya (QR573mn).
A similar major allocation of QR390mn has been made for the development of a major road to connect Rawdat al Rashed village on the western side of the Salwa Road with Umm Garn, located on the north eastern side of Dukhan High way.
In a significant development, a contract worth QR235mn was awarded yesterday for widening, strengthening and realigning a 3.3km stretch on the Najma Street starting from Hot Bread Bakery roundabout to the area lying at the entrance of Al Thumama signal. As per the development plans, signals will be installed at two points at the entry points to Al Hadara Street (inside Thumama) and Oqba bin Nafie street (at the entrance to  Matar Qadeem from E-Ring Road).
The new works, said Ashghal authorities, would improve the traffic movement along the signalised junction between the Airport Street and E-Ring road and would also enable U-turn movements. Besides the above, the works include the building of pedestrian and cycle paths and better landscaping works.
The work is expected to finish by the last quarter of 2017.
The road from Rawdat Rashed to Umm Garn will be developed in two phases. While the first package is worth QR182mn, the works in the second package are worth QR208mn.
The project aims to providing a network of roads to link Salwa and Dukhan highways and facilitating easy movement of vehicles away from the residential neighbourhoods of Rashed Village.
The first package of the Rashed  road project will consist of a three-lane carriageway of about 8.5km from Salwa highway entrance to near Rashed village.
The second package consists of a 10.4km road with a three-way dual carriageway that would start from the first phase ending near the Rashed village and will connect to an existing road to Shahaniya, bypassing the whole village.
The work is likely to be completed in over a year.
