Qatar skydivers clinch gold

Tanay: The Qatari skydiving team, affiliated to the Qatar Air Sports Committee in the Joint Special Forces, won the gold medal in the Four-way Rotation Canopy Formation competition at the 24th FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale - World Air Sports Federation) World Championship of Formation Skydiving in Tanay, Russia, yesterday.

The Qatar team which included Abdullah Hani, Saeed Al Kuwari, Hassan Al Malki, Ali Al Marri and Saleh Al Kuwari, won the first place after leading the points table with 151 points after eight rounds.

The Russian team won the silver medal with 147 points, while the bronze medal was won by the Belarusian team which accumulated 135 points.

Qatar also won the silver medal in the Two-way Sequential Canopy Formation competition where the Qatar 'A' team came in second place with 220 points. France 'A' team won the first place with 243 points while France 'B' team won the bronze medal with 194 points.

Five rounds of the competition were carried out yesterday to avoid possible interruptions from bad weather which is expected tomorrow.

Commander of the Joint Special Forces and Chairman of the Qatar Air Sports Committee, Major General Hamad bin Abdullah Al Fetais Al Marri, said in a statement yesterday that he dedicates this achievement to the wise leadership and the Qatari people.

He pointed out that winning this gold medal in the Four-way Rotation Canopy Formation competition for the first time in the history is a great and important achievement, pointing out that the Qatari team defeated the

Russian team, and expressed his thanks to the members of the team, wishing them more success in future tournaments.

For his part, Vice-Chairman of the Qatar Air Sports Committee, Abdullah Hamad Al Athba, said: “We dedicate this achievement to the Qatari people. In this tournament, we have won three medals, a gold, silver and bronze. The gold came in the Four-way Rotation Canopy Formation competition and silver for the Two-way Sequential event while the bronze was won by the four-way formation Team."

Al Athba added that this achievement is the result of a great effort for several years and this is a great achievement for sport in Qatar.
