Qatar parks to host 575 sports activities on weekends

Qatar Sports for All Federation (QSFA) launched on Thursday its all year-round activities for the public.

Speaking on the sidelines of Najah Qatari Forum (Qatari Success Forum) at Qatar National Convention Centre, QSFA Manager for the activity, Abdullah Al Dosari told The Peninsula that they have year-round sports activities at six parks in the country, namely Aspire Park, Al Bidda, Al Rayyan, Lusail Arena, Oxygen Park and Luqta.

The programme is called 365 Active Programme. Marathons are being held at the said parks every week and there is also free fitness classes with a community trainer who serves as a guide and mentor during the workout. The timing starts from 4pm onwards.

“We have 575 sports activities for this year which can be accessed through our mobile app ‘QSFA’. organised every Thursday and Friday and we invite the public to come and join us,” he said.

The activities aim at guiding individuals and communities to proper physical activity using public parks as well as providing complementary health services in cooperation with related organisations.

The activities are free of charge and open for all, both professional or non-professional athletes. This year alone, Al Dosari explained that they are focusing primarily on girls. “Anyone can attend our weekly activities, we have different sports every week, including cycling, football, shooting, paddle and volleyball, we also have an exercise coach. Every week, we change these activities for them to have a variety of choices,” he said.

At the Lusail Arena, the timing activities for men is from 3pm to 6pm, while for women is from 5pm to 7pm. 

They have been running the programme for two weeks now and Al Dosari revealed that the public’s participation is outstanding. “We tallied 25 people who participated in the first week, in the second week 240 people joined,” Al Dosari said.

QSFA also launched a new programme during the Najah Qatari Forum, which monitors the weight of individuals. 

“We will track their weight four times a year and we provide them data after a few months if they are improving or not. Next year on National Sport Day, prizes will be given to individuals who lose weight. We initiated this programme for people to monitor their weight, and have a proper diet,” he said.

Al Dosari explained that the year-round activities are targeted for the youth. “We are focusing on the youth because of three things – to avoid future illnesses and diseases, have a healthy lifestyle, and for their well-being.

The QSFA mobile app is a guide to finding out the best locations to practise sports as it provides an easy and interactive way to find directions and locations one can play sports. It also has a feature to track the daily activities and monitor one’s progress.

Among the upcoming events and competitions include QSFA Swimming Championshio on March 8; QSFA Fencing Competition on March 12; Learn Footbal Skill – Naija East Playground on March 17; QSFA Padel Championship for Men on March 14; and Fursan Championship on March 26.

QSFA was established in accordance with Minister of Youth and Sports Resolution No. (47) for the year 2015, “establishing Qatar Sports for All Federation.”

It is aimed to raise awareness of the concept of sports for all and to increase the number of participants in Qatari society who exercise regularly.
