There are about 60 factories recycling various materials such as wood, plastic, paper, batteries, oils and lubricants, electronic gadgets and tyres.
The official stressed that the department aims at reaching zero waste and has already started a plan in different phases, starting with co-operation with various entities in the country, including the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and some commercial complexes and hypermarkets to separate the recyclable materials from their waste.
Accordingly, some machines that recycle plastic were put at some branches at Al Meera where consumers can earn points for the plastic bottles they deposit for recycling.
There is also co-ordination with the General Cleanliness Department to separate the waste at the source, by providing dedicated containers for organic waste and recyclable waste.
Special waste containers are placed to collect small batteries as well.
An agreement is soon to be signed with Qatar Rail to put plastic recycling machines at some metro stations.
Al-Nasr said that the Waste Management Centre at Mesaieed City treats around 2,300 tonnes of mostly household waste a day, in addition to construction and building waste and tree waste.
