Qatar condemns Israeli bombing of QRCS office in Gaza Strip

* QRCS slams attack, says it will continue to provide humanitarian assistance

* Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital partially destroyed in another attack

* Doha calls on international community to exert efforts to end Israeli’s continuous crimes in the occupied territories

Qatar has expressed its strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation’s bombing of the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) building in the besieged Gaza Strip, which resulted in several deaths and injuries, the official QNA reported on Monday.

Parallel to the attack on the Red Crescent, another operation caused damage to and destruction of parts of Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital for Rehabilitation and Prosthetics, as a result of the continuous attacks on buildings surrounding the hospital, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said in a statement.

"Israel has also shamelessly bombed Al-Jalaa tower, which housed a number of media institutions, including Al Jazeera offices in the Gaza Strip," the statement added, noting that the targeting of humanitarian and media institutions is a clear violation of international law, humanitarian norms and values.

"The State of Qatar calls on the international community to condemn this sinful act and to exert further efforts to put an end to Israel’s continuous crimes in the occupied territories, and to protect civilians, journalists, medical practitioners and humanitarian workers," the statement continued. "Finally, the State of Qatar affirms, in this context, that it will spare no effort in supporting the just Palestinian cause and the brotherly people of Palestine."

In a separate statement , the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) announced yesterday that its office in Gaza was attacked by Israeli occupation forces, killing two Palestinians and injuring 10 other Palestinian citizens.

QRCS secretary-general Ambassador Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi said the attack on QRCS's Gaza office was a severe violation of different charters, customs and Geneva's four conventions, which Israel ratified in 1951.

He said the targeting of the QRCS office, which operates under the umbrella of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, was a "violation against the crews as well as against humanitarian and aid work that is internationally recognised, adding that the incident amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity", QNA reported.

"In light of today's violation, QRCS can only remind all parties of the international community and the humanitarian movement of the need to abide by the principles and provisions of international humanitarian law, particularly in the circumstances of armed conflicts," he said.

QRCS condemned the targeting of its office in Gaza and stressed the need for relief teams to continue their work in accordance with the international humanitarian law.

QRCS noted that the targeting of its office was a violation of international humanitarian law, stressing that the organisation would continue with its humanitarian role and the provision of relief assistance to those affected in Gaza in co-operation with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
