Qatar calls for measures to curb organised crime, money laundering

Qatar has called for making use of all capabilities in confronting and curbing organised crime, corruption, drugs, money laundering and terrorism.

This came in a speech delivered by Major General Dr Abdullah Yusuf al-Mal, adviser to HE the Minister of Interior, at the opening of the 26th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which started in the Austrian capital yesterday and continues until May 26.

Dr al-Mal welcomed the efforts made by member-states to implement the Doha Declaration of the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, hosted by Qatar in April 2015.

He underscored the importance of launching the global programme for the implementation of the recommendations of the Doha Declaration in co-operation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and funding its projects for youth crime prevention through sport, rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners, education for justice, in addition to the integrity of the judiciary and the prevention of corruption.

He also pointed out that Qatar has allocated an annual award in the name of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in line with international efforts to achieve integrity, transparency and fighting corruption.

Concluding his speech, Dr al-Mal called on member states to support the draft resolution submitted by Qatar and Japan on follow-up to the implementation of the recommendations of the 13th Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice as well as the preparations for the 14th Congress to be hosted by Japan.

The opening session was attended by the ambassador of Qatar to Austria Sheikh Ali bin Jassim al-Thani, and members of Qatar’s delegation participating in the session.
