PIH becomes first Qatari private-sector signatory to UN Womenق€™s Empowerment Principles

Marking International Women’s Day on March 8, Power International Holding (PIH) has signed on to the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), becoming the first Qatari private-sector company to adopt the framework.

Chaired by UN Women and the UN Global Compact, the WEPs have over 5,000 signatories in 141 countries to date, representing more than 10mn employees.

“By joining the WEPs community, Power International Holding bolsters its commitment to gender equality at the highest level, in an effort to work collaboratively as part of multi-stakeholder networks that promote empowering business practices for women,” said Ramez al-Khayyat, vice-chairman and Group CEO of PIH.

The WEPs encompass seven core principles - high-level corporate leadership; fair treatment without discrimination; employee health, wellbeing and safety; education and training for career advancement; enterprise development, supply chain and marketing practices; community initiatives and advocacy; and measurement and reporting.

“The seven principles closely align with our vision of realising a brighter, more sustainable future for Qatar. As such, we are proud to adopt the WEPs as the first Qatari company to jointly work on removing barriers that women face on the road to full economic participation,” al-Khayyat added.

PIH joined the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, in 2020, and has since continued to build a diverse and inclusive workforce that supports the company’s innovation and growth targets, a press statement noted.

In line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Qatar National Vision 2030, PIH has built its operations around the ten universally accepted principles of the UN Global Compact, covering human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

By advocating for the Sustainable Development Goals in several long-term initiatives, PIH continues to demonstrate how businesses can unlock economic, social and environmental benefits for the region and globally.
