New-look Al Khor Family Park expects half a million visitors annually

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) reopened Al Khor Family Park, the largest in Qatar, yesterday after a major renovation adding many new facilities, games, a battery-operated train and children’s favourite animals and birds among many more.

The new facilities which were added to the park include a mini zoo with seven sections that include 315 animals of 49 species including 290 new ones like rhinoceros, crocodile, giraffe, bear, tiger, cheetah, monkey and many species of birds.

The entry fees of Al Khor Family Park is QR15 per person for adult and QR10 for the children up to 10 years. The train ride will charge QR5 per person. The park will open from Saturday to Thursday, from 8am to 11pm.

On Friday, it will receive visitors from 2pm to 11pm and Tuesday will be dedicated for women and children. It is expected that the number of visitors to the park will reach about 500,000 annually.

The 240,000 square metre park features a zoo, a waterfall and a battery-operated train, a spacious restaurant, mosque, museum, mini-golf area, wall mural, skating area, children’s play area, basketball court, food kiosks, drinking fountain, waterfall and an amphitheatre.

Al Khor Park has two play areas: one for older children and one for younger children. These play areas are completely covered with a rubber floor and cover an area of approximately 4,000 square metres. There is also an external area for sports and surfboarding.

The opening ceremony was attended by Assistant Undersecretary of for General Services at MME, Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Al Sada; Director of the Municipality of Al Khor and Al Dhakhira, Abdullah Ibrahim Al Sada; Director of Public Relations Department, Nasser Abdulrahman Al Sarami; In-Charge of Al Khor Family Park, Khalid Abdul-Rahman Al Nuaimi. 

Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs at the MME, Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Al Sada said that the opening of the Al Khor Family Park today comes after a major renovation which took almost 3 months, where 7 new sections were added in the park, while speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of the opening ceremony.

“Many animals have been added to the park and different types of birds that were not present in the Park before. The number of animals has now reached over 300 animals and birds,” said Al Sada. 

He explained that the coming period will witness a study to assess the current situation of the Park and the animals in it, in the framework of the expansion and development of services in the park. He pointed out that the park and the distinctive zoo in it are open to families on a daily basis.

For his part, the Director of Al Khor and Al Dhakhira Municipality Abdullah Ibrahim Al Sada said that the opening of Al Khor Park for families is considered a new addition to the area, serving its people and various areas, providing distinguished entertainment services to the public.

The safety and security standards have also been redeveloped to ensure that all visitors to the park can spend time there without having to worry about anything.

The Park has a Roman-like amphitheatre that can accommodate about 400 people. This theatre can be used for events and parties.The Park after the expansion will witness a large turnout during the week-end, with an estimated number of 20,000 visitors during the weekend. 

The Park received before the expansion about 12,000 visitors in a day during the weekend. As the excellence in services and expansion of the park will attract a large number of visitors from families.

The Park also witnesses visits of students from a number of school at the rate of from 2 to 3 schools daily.
