MME implements laws to maintain public hygiene

Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) is keen to activate and implement various laws that contribute to maintaining public cleanliness in the country, especially with regard to waste collection and the proper and safe disposal of waste in accordance with the highest international standards.

General Cleanliness Department of MME has exerted great efforts in maintaining hygiene across the country. Between January and July this year, the  Department collected  109,089 tonnes of domestic waste, construction waste, recycling materials, solid waste, tree waste and random dumping waste. The work is carried out by a team of 3,445  cleaning workers, technicians and administrators.

Minister of Municipality and Environment and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie affirmed the keenness of Qatar, represented by MME, to participate in the World Cleanup Day 2021 celebration. In his speech to mark the occasion, the Minister said the aim of this participation is to engage in this global campaign based on five basic principles: cooperation, positivity, leadership, technology and fun.

He added that this participation comes from the belief in the importance of public hygiene, especially in light of COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected the whole world. Hygiene is also one of the important indicators to measure and preserve the civilization and progress of countries, which means maintaining the level of comfort for everyone and ensuring a decent life, which requires an individual and collective commitment, that each individual in society assumes his responsibility towards himself, his country and society. It is one of the necessities of life and is not an indispensable thing, the Minister said. 

He indicated that to enhance this service and ensure its efficiency, the Ministry launched a number of projects in support of public hygiene, and the General Cleanness Department strengthened its continuous efforts by launching a number of awareness campaigns for the benefit of school students, and implemented a number of campaigns to clean kindergartens and beaches in partnership with youth centres, community, and civil and private sector, he added.

The Minister stressed that the main work to preserve the cleanliness of the country, the environment and the planet is to continue what we do on a daily and continuous basis, by reducing as much waste as possible and working on the safe disposal of waste, sorting and recycling it and using it to generate new sources of energy. 

Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs Engineer Ahmed Mohammad Al Sada, stressed that the participation of the Ministry in the celebration of this day is an important occasion in the public services sector, to emphasise the importance and centrality of public cleanliness in various areas of life.
