Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment represented by General Cleanliness Department today launched second phase of sorting waste at sources targeting all banks, financial institutions, commercial complexes and malls.
Under the programme the Ministry will provide blue containers to sort the recyclable wastes like paper, plastic, aluminum and glass and different containers for food waste and organic materials.
“It is mandatory for banks and malls and other such entities to ask cleaning companies operating inside their facilities to help with recycling process by putting the recyclable materials in the designated container placed there,” Director of General Cleanliness Department at MME, Muqbil Madhour Al Shammari told The Peninsula.
Speaking at the launch ceremony held at Al Rayan Municipality, Al Shammari said the programme is being implemented in four phases from 2019 to 2022.
“First phase which was launched in 2019 covered 590 schools and 48 health centres where new containers were provided to sort the wastes from the source,” said Al Shammari.
He said that second phase of the programme, which begins today, will cover all banks, financial institutions, commercial complexes and malls where 2,000 containers for recyclable materials will be placed during this phase.
“The General Cleanliness Department will deploy 24 vehicles to transport the recyclable materials,” said Al Shammari.
He said that third phase of the programme which will begin in 2021 will cover universities, hotels, public parks, bus stations, governmental and semi-governmental organisations, Corniche and Doha City.
“Fourth phase of the programme will begin in 2022 when electronic services will be launched to collect the recyclable materials from all the houses in the country,” said Al Shammari.
He said that all the establishments, playgrounds and facilities of 2022 FIFA World Cup shall contribute to achieve an eco-friendly tournament.
