MEC makes electronic weighing scales mandatory

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has issued a circular making it mandatory for all commercial outlets and similar facilities to use modern electronic weighing scales.

There is a grace period until February 28, 2017 to abide by the circular. The move is meant to guarantee the transparency of commercial transactions and enhance the atmosphere of trust and confidence between service suppliers and consumers. This would also ensure that commercial outlets would be abiding by their legal obligations when selling products that require weighing.

The MEC stressed that modern electronic scales, which comply with the approved standards and specifications, are accurate and cannot be tampered with, to fraudulently alter weight. These also help consumers know the quantities they are buying accurately in addition to the price to be paid, through a detailed purchase bill that ensure fairness for both customers and salespersons.

It also protects both the rights of the consumer and the seller against any harm to their interests due to any defects or damages to the ordinary scales. In addition, the electronic scales can be easily monitored by the entities concerned.

The MEC affirmed that after the grace period, it will monitor closely the market in this regard and deal accordingly with violators, referring them to the department concerned and take necessary legal procedures against them.

The MEC has urged all customers to report any violations to its Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department through the following channels: Hotline: 16001, e-mail: [email protected], Twitter: @MEC_Qatar, Instagram: MEC_Qatar, MEC mobile app for Android and iOS: MEC_Qatar
