Italian parliamentarians praise Qatar's labour reforms, workers' rights

A delegation from the Italian Parliament, currently visiting the country, praised the positive changes and reforms made by Qatar in the field of labour and workers' rights, QNA reported.

The delegation praised the legislation and laws enacted by the Qatari government with the aim of preserving workers' rights, improving and upgrading their living conditions.

They said that during their visit they had held several fruitful meetings with a number of prominent officials, noting that it contributed to strengthening friendship and constructive co-operation between Qatar and Italy.

In his speech at a press conference, Sergio Romagnoli, a member of the Senate and Chairman of the Labour Committee, said that the delegation was briefed on many positive developments taking place in Qatar.

He said that he met Wednesday with HE the Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri, and described the meeting as fruitful. Romagnoli stressed that the visit in general was very fruitful, and said he got acquainted with many wonderful work taking place in Qatar, noting that the delegation also visited the Afghan refugee centre, describing it as a properly equipped place.

Luciano Cantone, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Transport Committee of the Italian Parliament, thanked Qatar and also thanked in particular the National Human Rights Committee for enabling the delegation to see firsthand things there.

He said that during his visit, the delegation held many constructive meetings, and was briefed on the legislation and laws that have been enacted in order to preserve workers' rights, stressing that it is a distinctive matter and confirms that Qatar is on the right and good path.

Cantone added that Qatar's hosting of the 2022 World Cup enabled the country to change and develop many things, especially with regard to infrastructure, explaining that there is a lot of co-operation between Qatar and Italy, and wished that peace and stability would prevail in both countries and the people enjoy them.

Gianluca Ferrara, Senator and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Parliament, said that the delegation met with HE the Assistant Foreign Minister Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater, and that the meeting discussed the latest developments on the Ukrainian crisis.

He added: "I want to refer here to the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine. We condemn this occupation and any other occupation."

Ferrara expressed his happiness that Qatar is one of the best contributors, which plays a distinguished role for humanitarian aid.

Sergio Vaccaro, Senator and Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Italian Parliament, stressed that this visit will be a nucleus for strengthening co-operation between Qatar and Italy, noting that during the visit many important topics such as trade exchange between the two countries were discussed.
