Doha: The Anti-Smuggling and Customs Security Administration thwarted an attempt to smuggle a huge amount of banned tobacco inside an incoming container at Hamad Port.
In a video posted on social media, the Customs Department showed that the banned substance was wrapped with medical masks and stashed inside its boxes. The total weight of the seized contraband was 2.4 tonnes.
"GAC calls upon all members of society to participate in the national campaign (kafeh) against customs smuggling and customs offences by providing information notes in complete secrecy via hotline 16500 or e-mail [email protected]," the department tweeted.
The authorities have been issuing continuous warnings against carrying illegal substances into the country.
Customs officers are provided with all means of support including the latest devices and continuous training to read the body language of passengers and be aware of the latest methods followed by smugglers.
