Drive to clean marine environment

The General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security of the Ministry of Interior launched an initiative to clean the marine environment in order to create a sustainable environment free of pollution, especially the one near offshore platforms.
The initiative has been launched to meet Qatar’s strategy which aims to maintain the safety of marine environments for growth of marine life. To make the initiative successful, the participating teams have been divided into various groups and every group includes a number of divers who have removed waste like fishing nets and ropes in addition to other trash from the sea, the Ministry of Interior yesterday said on its official Twitter account .
The Department asked fishermen and sea visitors to keep the marine environment clean adding that the livelihood of fishermen depended on it.
It added: "Throwing waste exposes people to legal accountability because it negatively affects fish resources."
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment organised awareness lecture for students of Um-Salal School about cleanliness under the title “My Environment Is My Heartbeat”.
The lecture was given by specialist Sharifa Al Rumaihi who explained to students the way to live in a clean environment that is free of pollutants. She explained the types of garbage containers and the aim of wastes’ classification and the need for children to throw the waste in the designated place.
Meanwhile, Al Gharafa office under Al Rayan Municipality last month removed 26 abandoned vehicles and cabins, 76 different wastes and transferred 2 violations to security authorities.
