Baby dugong rescued in Qatar; named 'Oscar' by Ministry

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced a rescue of another dugong pup found on Saturday in Khor Al Daid area.

The baby dugong, named Oscar, was found by Khalifa Omar Saleh Al-Hamidi, a Qatari environmental activist who also took part in the rescue of a dugong, named Ocean, earlier this month.

"A specialized team from the Ministry immediately transferred the baby dugong to a designated tank in Fuwairit (Sea Turtle Project) and named him Oscar, and provided him with the necessary care to ensure his safety," said the Ministry in a statement on Twitter.

It further mentioned that the wounds of the baby dugong were treated. It has also been fed and given milk, under the supervision of the Ministry's aquatic nutritionists.

"Next February, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will prepare for the release of the recently rescued dugongs, after the necessary care has been provided and they are able to rely on themselves, as they will be returned to live in their original environment," the Ministry announced.
