The Department of Mosques at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) Thursday announced the names of 183 mosques that were approved for I'tikaf (staying in mosque) during the last 10 days of Ramadan. I'tikaf is an Islamic practice about staying the last 10 days in mosques during holy month of Ramadan, devoting oneself to the worship of Allah during these days and staying away from worldly affairs, the official Qatar News Agency said, adding that I'tikaf will be performed only at designated mosques.
The mosques administration issued a statement explaining some of the terms and conditions within the framework of its keenness to restart I’tikaf and to provide services to those who stay in mosques during the last 10 days. Awqaf explained that the mosques were approved after taking into account their geographical location and the readiness of their facilities to serve worshippers.
The administration stipulated that the age of the person performing I'tikaaf (Mutakif) be not less than 15 years and if less, must be accompanied by a guardian. Children below eight years are not allowed to perform I’tikaf. Awqaf asked worshippers to maintain hygiene, not to harm the mosque's properties and not to disturb other worshippers with side conversations. “Hanging clothes on walls, columns and other mosque furniture is prohibited and it’s forbidden to sleep or eat in undesignated places,” Awqaf said.
