An attempt was made to burgle a grocery shop located on Al Thumaya lane of Najma in the early hours of Sunday, it is learnt.
Sources told Gulf Times that the noise of the burglars breaking open the glass door of the shop alerted people residing in a nearby building, forcing the culprits to flee.
Some of the residents said they saw a couple of people running away from the scene under the cover of darkness.
The Thumaya neighbourhood reportedly had witnessed some thefts in recent months and the police are investigating.
A resident shopkeeper of the area said as the winter sets in there are chances of thieves taking advantage of the deserted streets as people go to bed earlier than usual. He said there are more people on the streets late in the evenings and also in the early hours during summer.
