Ashghal opens Al Tadamon Intersection underpass

Doha: The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has opened the carriageway and underpass at Fereej Al Ali Intersection, popularly known as Al Tadamon Intersection, on D-Ring Road.

The road was opened in the morning today, Saturday, February 12, 2022.

The opening will save 70% journey time and enhance flow of traffic between D Ring road and Doha Expressway and will benefit areas like Nuaija, Al Hilal, Old Airport that houses many commercial, educational and healthcare facilities.

The opening includes a carriageway along with three intersections of Fereej Al Ali, Nuaija and Lulu. The number of lanes has been increased from three to four in each direction, raising the road capacity from 12,000 vehicles to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The 1km Fereej Al Ali underpass will provide free flow of traffic into D Ring Road from Doha Expressway, saving around 50% travel time since the tunnel has three lanes in each direction and can accommodate 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Ashghal also developed 3.5km rainwater drainage networks to raise the efficiency in the area, through micro tunneling, and reconstructed infrastructure services, such as water, electricity, drainage, and communications networks.

The D Ring Road Upgrade used 17,000 tonnes of steel, 100,000 tonnes of asphalt and 105,000 m2 of concrete, digging 3.5km of rainwater drainage tunnels, installing about 30km of electricity networks, and 32km of infrastructure services such as drainage and communications networks.

Eng. Yousef Al Emadi, Projects Affairs Manager, confirmed that Ashghal is keen to develop and establish an integrated road network as part of its comprehensive plan to achieve an advanced highway network that links all areas in the country together.

He further explained that Ashghal has relied on national products available in the market, noting that about 66% of locally made materials such as lighting poles, cables, rebar, drainage pipes, and others were used.
