The parks are new additions to the municipality's continuously expanding green spaces. The opening was attended by Abdulaziz al-Sayed, acting director of Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality, Sheikha Dana Rashid al-Thani, chief official of the Ras Laffan Community Outreach Programme, Abdullah al-Muraikhi, member of the Central Municipal Council from Al Khor, and a number of municipality officials.

Abdullah Ibrahim al-Mohannadi, head of the Public Parks Department at Al Khor and Al Thakira Municipality, told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the three parks were constructed in co-operation with the Ras Laffan Community Outreach Programme. “The three gardens were previously empty plots that distorted the general view in the city of Al Khor. Turning them into public gardens added a new, civilised touch to the city.

The first park has a large group of trees and a walkway in the middle with a length of 600m and also includes seven pergolas of different shapes as a resting places for visitors. The place is equipped with pleasant lighting.

Al Owaina Park covers an area of 22,000sqm and includes green spaces over 18,000sqm. It is surrounded by a 500m walkway with a large number of local trees. It also includes a small canopy as a rest stop for visitors.

Al Baraha Park is considered the first of its kind in Al Khor as it has been designed keeping the local heritage in mind while providing a large area for games - both modern and traditional. Al-Mohannadi said it has been named Al Baraha Park because it contains popular games.

The parks have been built without fences.

Al-Muraikhi praised the municipality for its continuous efforts to support many of the projects that are coming up in Al Khor.

“The three parks are a model for a series of projects that the (Ras Laffan) programme has supported in Al Khor over the past years. The three parks are a new addition to the beautification plans in the city of Al Khor, especially in view if the preparations to host FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” he added.
