Doha: Pictures of a stadium concept designed by American artist Paul Pfeiffer many years ago have now gone viral, especially among football fans. The concept stadium can accommodate 1 million fans.
The artwork was created by Pfeiffer for the 16th Biennale of Sydney in 2008. Pfeiffer created a futuristic sculpture inspired by the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, made in close collaboration with the architects of the original stadium, Bligh Voller Nield Architecture, Sydney. The model, eight metres in diameter, morphs the existing design that seats 80,000 people into a structure that could, if built to scale, accommodate an audience of one million.
“Pfeiffer’s Vitruvian Figure (2008) evokes a disturbing apparition of spectacle and pays homage to the modern visions of the first-century BC Roman architect, Vitruvius,” an online listing of the artwork said.
Football fans were seen debating which football club’s fans will be able to fill the massive stadium. Some were wondering how they will spot the players from the top tier. It will be an event to remember when football legends like Ronaldo or Messi score when 1 million fans are watching and cheering.
Currently, the world’s largest stadium is Rungrado First Of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, which can hold 150,000 people and holds football matches.
Narendra Modi Stadium at Ahmedabad can accommodate 132,000 people and is the largest cricket stadium in the world.
Michigan Stadium at Ann Arbor has a capacity of 107,601 and mainly hosts American football college matches.
The largest football stadium in Europe, FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou holds nearly 100,000 fans today.
