Mercury level touches 49C, hot and windy Friday likely

Doha and other parts of the country will continue to experience scorching conditions on Friday, with the forecast showing that the heat will be accompanied by strong winds in most areas, dust and low visibility.

The Qatar Met department has also issued a marine warning for windy conditions and high seas on Friday.

The mercury level went up to 49C in the country on Thursday, recorded in Batna, while Doha saw the maximum temperature rise to 46C. In comparison, the highest temperature on Wednesday was 47C in Ghuwairiyah, with Doha witnessing a high of 44C.

The Qatar Met department has issued an advisory on the symptoms of sunstroke, how to prevent it and what to do if a person suffers from one.


On Friday, the country is again likely to see hot daytime conditions as well as dust in some places, the detailed forecast states. The wind speed (northwesterly) will be 16-26 knots, reaching a high of 35 knots in some places at times. Visibility, meanwhile, will be 2km or less in some areas.

The forecast for offshore areas is that dusty conditions are likely, and the wind speed (northwesterly) will be 18-25 knots, going up to 32 knots in some places occasionally. The sea level may rise to 12ft.

The maximum temperature is expected to be 47C on Friday in Mesaieed and Wakrah, 45C in Doha, 44C in Al Khor and 41C in Abu Samra.

On Thursday, the highest temperature was recorded in Batna – 49C, data issued by the Met department showed.

This was followed by 48C in Abu Hamour, Sheehaniyah and Karana, 47C in Turayna and Jumayliyah, 46C in Doha (airport area), the Qatar University area, Al Khor and Ghuwairiyah, 45C in Wakrah and 44C in the Hamad International Airport area and Mesaieed.
