Expat jailed for drugs possession

A Doha criminal court has sentenced an expatriate to five years in jail and imposed a fine of QR200,000 on him for illicit drugs possession, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

The man was arrested while receiving a cargo sent to him by air mail from an African company that contained around 6.4gm of amphetamine, the Arrayah report said.

Accordingly, the court convicted the man and sentenced him, besides ordering his deportation upon serving the sentence and confiscation of the seized material.

The matter came to light after Customs officers in charge of air mail received a small box containing a substance, which they doubted to be an illicit drug. Their suspicion was confirmed after they opened the box.

When the defendant came to receive the box, he was asked whether it belonged to him and he confirmed that it did.

Eventually, when the man was confronted with its contents, he admitted that he had ordered the illicit material for the purpose of trade.
