The Central Municipal Council (CMC) yesterday recommended setting up commercial shops at public parks and neighbourhood playgrounds to serve visitors.
The CMC suggested that the Ministry of Municipality and Environment carry out a study on the issue especially since some areas near parks and playgrounds have no neighbourhood markets (Al Furjan souqs).
The proposal if implemented will help people living in the vicinity and other visitors get easy access to essential requirements.
The shops to be set up under this plan should not be limited to cafeterias and eateries, the council said, adding that a study could be conducted on the type of commercial activity that is required the most.
Meanwhile, the CMC yesterday discussed the responses of the MME to its previous recommendations regarding the regulation of road signs and instruction panels, and noted that the replies were adequate.
The council said it would follow up on updates on the issue with both the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
Regarding the naming of intersections, the CMC suggested modifying the names of some and approved new names for a few others.
The CMC’s regular session yesterday hosted Safar Mubarak al-Shafi, director of the MME’s public cleanliness department, who briefed the council members on Law No 18 for 2017 on Public Hygiene. The members discussed with the senior official the various articles and stipulations of the new law and the penalties for violations.
Al-Shafi answered the various queries of the members on related topics and the mechanism of implementing the provisions of the law and its executive regulations.
