ACS Doha students clinch top 3 places in AMC Math Olympiads

ACS International School Doha has received top accolades for the third year in a row through its students' participation in the AMC Math Olympiads, and has become the first school administering AMC in Qatar since 2021.

The three highest scoring student awards were received by Nikita Bortnichek, Amira Jafri and Anton Schlegel. The Mathletics club consists of over 20 students ranging from ages nine to 18 years, and share a passion for mathematical problem solving, the school has said in a statement.

MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions (MAA AMC) programme leads in strengthening the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers and helps America’s educators identify talent and foster a love of mathematics. The MAA AMC programme positively impacts the analytical skills needed for future careers in an innovative society.

In 1950, the first Mathematical Contest, sponsored by the New York Metropolitan Section of the Mathematics Association of America (MAA), took place. It was given in approximately 200 schools to around 6,000 students in the New York area only. Today, the competition has grown to more than 300,000 students participating annually, in over 4,000 schools.

ACS Doha Mathletes participate in several Math Olympiads throughout the year, including American Scholastic Mathematics Competition (ASMA), where the ACS Doha Junior team won the first place and ACS Senior team placed second in a competition of over 169 international public and private schools worldwide.

“As with sports and other competitions, these Math Olympiads instil structure and perseverance and assist students to not only compete with other schools and teams, but also internally compete with their own scores and performance, bettering themselves with each competition,” said Hamid Hamidoglu, MYP/IBDP Mathematics teacher.

With the impressive performance in Mathematics at ACS Doha, Advanced Placement (AP) Math courses are now being offered. They require students to display mastery on AP Exams across several disciplines, and represents an exceptional level of achievement, allowing students to demonstrate that they have exceeded most university entry requirements. Some of the most competitive scholarship awards consider students’ AP Exam scores. Many universities also use AP Exam scores to place students into honours classes.
