The new second-hand market in Doha to replace Souq Kharaj will become operational during the second half of 2017, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce said yesterday.

The project has been developed with participation of the private sector and commercial space in the market will be available to traders at affordable rents, said the ministry.

The ministry has awarded the contract for developing and managing the market to Triple A Trading and Contracting, a Qatari company owned by Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah Al Thani, its logistics committee announced yesterday.

The market will be built on an area of 35,000sqm in Umm Bashar near Hamad International Airport.

The company will invest over QR206m, the statement added.

Forty local companies took part in the bid and seven qualified. They were asked to submit offers, including competitive rents for target tenants and professional designs that can ensure smooth traffic and comfortable shopping experience.

Triple A company came out with the best offers, including excellent designs using traditional Qatari architecture for 324 shops with competitive monthly rents of QR54 per sqm, said the statement. The company’s designs assured the best use of space with sufficient parking areas and a basement for transportation of goods to the market.

The company is committed to retaining traditional and cultural features of the market in the design, the statement added.

The logistics committee invited bids on March 1, 2015 to involve the private sector in the project.

The competitive bid has given a chance for traders to hire a 60sqm area for QR3,500 per month. This is good for small and medium projects and will enable traders to offer competitive prices to customers, said the ministry.
