An Ethiopian man has been sentenced to one year in jail and subsequent deportation by a Doha Criminal Court for stealing money from a newspaper seller. Arabic daily Arrayah has reported that the victim, who used to work as a newspaper seller, was at a shopping mall with QR1,550 and was heading to a exchange to send the funds home. The defendant deliberately bumped into the victim and poured a cup of tea on the latter’s pants. The defendant pretended to apologise and started to help the victim to clean his dress. It was only later that the victim realised he had lost the money and reported the issue to the police. Reviewing cameras in the mall, the defendant was identified and arrested.
